Body Temperature of 96.8: A Sign of Being Sick?

When our body temperature drops to a level of 96.8 degrees Fahrenheit, it can be a sign that something is amiss with our overall health. For many people, experiencing low body temperatures, accompanied by various symptoms, can be a frustrating and debilitating experience.

I have personal experience with this phenomenon. In the past, I would often wake up in the morning feeling extremely cold, despite being snuggled under a blanket at night. This was accompanied by a range of other symptoms, including cold hands and feet, constipation, low sex drive, and extreme fatigue. Over time, I developed new symptoms, such as rashes on my shins, bruising that wouldn't heal, puffy eyes, face, and swollen joints. Despite feeling terrible for years, most of which was spent in bed due to hydrocephalus, I never seemed to be able to shake off this underlying condition.

As someone with Diabetes insipidus due to surgery to remove a colloid cyst from the third ventricle in 2003 and subsequent shunt revisions, I have had to deal with ongoing health issues. Recently, I noticed that my body temperature would drop significantly at night, making it difficult for me to regain it on its own.

Despite various tests and examinations by my GP and specialists, nothing conclusive was ever found. However, one test result did indicate abnormal findings consistent with arthritis. This has been the case for over a year now, with no clear explanation or treatment options available.

However, I have noticed that when my body temperature drops to around 96.8 degrees Fahrenheit, I often experience significant improvements in my symptoms. For example, after taking warm tea and dressing warmly, I can start to feel better within hours. This is especially true if I've been experiencing a migraine or other symptoms such as vertigo.

In my case, it's not uncommon for me to have a body temperature of around 97.5-98 degrees Fahrenheit when battling a migraine, which is significantly higher than the typical normal range. My husband has also noticed that I'm often very cold during these episodes, something that is unusual for me since I'm generally a warm-blooded person.

By taking medication such as Advil, Amerge, Tylenol 3, and Betahistine, I've been able to manage my symptoms over time. While I still experience occasional episodes of low body temperature and related symptoms, I've learned to recognize the signs and take steps to alleviate them.
